Remembering Guy Upjohn

Guy Upjohn's love of the natural world helped shape the Upjohn Nature Reserve

The Muskoka Conservancy is remembering Guy Warner Upjohn (1932–2026) , whose passion for the natural world helped create the Upjohn Nature Reserve.

Guy and his wife Sandra shared a lifelong love of nature and adventure. Years ago, they purchased a property near Bracebridge that they called “The Stone House.” The land—150 acres of bush, wetlands, and beaver ponds—was both rugged and beautiful. The house itself came with challenges: no electricity, no running water, and an interior in need of serious repair. For Guy, however, this was an opportunity.

Each year, Muskoka Conservancy awards $2,000 to a student pursuing post-secondary studies in Natural Sciences or related Technologies — including Biology, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Wildlife Technology, Environmental Engineering, and more.

This bursary supports students who demonstrate:

✔ A passion for environmental stewardship and conservation

Eligibility: Permanent residents of Ontario living within the District of Muskoka enrolled in full- or part-time post-secondary studies.

Announcing: Muskoka Conservancy Protects 597 Acres in Fraserburg

We’re excited to share some big conservation news!

Muskoka Conservancy has officially acquired MapleCross–Fraserburg Nature Reserve, our second-largest protected area to date. Located in the hamlet of Fraserburg just east of Bracebridge, this 597-acre (242-hectare) property is now protected in perpetuity.

The newly protected reserve includes a mix of upland forests and wetlands that provide important habitat for several species at risk, including Midland painted turtle, Eastern wood pewee, and black ash. Approximately 17 per cent of the property is wetland and peatland—critical ecosystems that store carbon, support biodiversity, and help mitigate flooding.

Historically used as a hunt camp, the land will now be stewarded for conservation and community benefit. As part of our long-term stewardship plans, Muskoka Conservancy intends to develop trails that will welcome the public and help connect people with nature.

A Growing Conservation Legacy

With the protection of MapleCross–Fraserburg Nature Reserve, Muskoka Conservancy now safeguards:

• 62 properties

• Over 6,700 acres of land

• 1,100 acres of wetlands

• 85,000 feet of natural shoreline

This project came together quickly and would not have been possible without strong collaboration and generous support. We are deeply grateful to the Government of Canada, through the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, as well as the Kenneth M. Molson Foundation, MapleCross Foundation, the Government of Ontario's Greenlands Conservation Partnership program, administered by the Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA), the Echo Foundation, and the Chisholm-Thomson Family Foundation.

As Executive Director Scott Young shared: “We were blown away by the support we received. Thanks to everyone who rallied around this project — we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Invasive Species: What You Can Do

Spring is coming, and as the green springs up all around us, you may see some plants (and even animals) that you know aren't supposed to be there.

Invasive species in the province can be reported by calling the toll-free Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711, submitting sightings online via EDDMapS Ontario , or using the iNaturalist Invasive Species Ontario project.

For specific sightings like wild pigs, email wildpigs@ontario.ca or call 1-833-933-2355.

Take Photos: Always try to include a photo of the species in your report.
Specific Sightings: For wild pigs or other high-priority invasive species, specialized reporting lines are available.
Details Matter: Be prepared to provide the location, date, and description of the species.

Forest Bathing Nature Quest with Laurie Lamont of Wandering Muskoka

What is Forest Bathing? Also known as Shinrin- Yoku refers to the practice of spending time in forest or natural areas for the purpose of enhancing health wellness and happiness. The practice follows the general principal that it is beneficial to spend time bathing in the atmosphere of nature. The Japanese words translated into English as forest bathing. Although Forest Bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice, the use of the terms forest therapy and Shinrin-Yoku do not mean a specifically Japanese practice. It means spending time in nature in a way that invites healing interactions. There is a long tradition of this in cultures throughout the world. It’s not just about healing people - it includes healing for the forest or river or desert or whatever environment you are in. There are an infinite number of healing activities that can be incorporated into a walk in a forest or any other natural area. An activity is likely to be healing when it makes room for listening, for quiet and accepting presence, and for inquiry through all of the eight sensory modes we possess.

About Laurie Lamont - The Forest is the Therapist, the guide opens the door……………

Laurie landed in Huntsville at the age of 13 spending most of her adolescent and adult years in Muskoka. She has spent her career as a counsellor and public educator at a local social service agent. She has had a special relationship with the land and water of the area having spent countless hours in the lakes, rivers and forests that is Muskoka.

Laurie has completed an intensive practicum with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides to become a certified Nature Therapy Guide. She is trained in Wilderness First Aid and local foraging.

She brings a calm and gentle approach to sharing the practice that she is so passionate about.

August Paddle Quest

Our upcoming Paddle Quest will explore one of Muskoka Conservancy’s newest Protected Areas, the Buck Lake Nature Reserve donated earlier in 2025. We will paddle along the shore of Buck Lake to the mouth of Axe Creek, travelling down the creek to explore the pristine, marshy shorelines and the creatures and critters that call the land home.

*Please note that the landing spot for the hike can be a bit tricky for kayakers to get in and out of their boats AND that the hike does contain some steep inclines.

When:

Tuesday, August 19th, 2025 (Rain Day: Thursday, August 21st, 2025)
Arrive by 9:00am to get organized and sign the waiver
On the water by 9:30am

Where

Buck Lake Nature Reserve - specific lo cation will be shared by email a day prior to the event. After registering, keep an eye on your inbox!
Paddle time: approximately 2 hours
There will be no bathroom access

Bring your own:

Canoe or kayak. This is NOT suitable for stand-up paddleboards,
Paddles (including a spare), 15 m of floating rope, Lifejacket/PFD for each participant, whistle or other sound device, bailer.
Hat, sunscreen, rain gear, lunch and snacks, water, shoes you can get wet.

Safety:

All participants must be comfortable in the water and paddling in wind and waves.
PFD’s must always be worn and done up , even if it is a scorcher of a day.
All children under the age of 16 require an adult

Marvelous Mosses

Marvelous Mosses of Muskoka Nature Quest

What – Muskoka is host to a wide variety of mosses and liverworts, two of the three types of bryophytes. Small but mighty, bryophytes grow in every corner of the globe and have adapted to some of the world's harshest conditions. Many species are critical components of ecosystems across Muskoka. From wetlands to forests to rock outcrops, Muskoka's characteristic landscape would not be the same without expansive carpets of soft mosses and liverworts. The UpJohn Nature Reserve near Bracebridge contains around 80 species of mosses and liverworts, including 10 species of peat mosses!

Adam Storey Bio : Recent Lakehead University graduate Adam Storey has been studying bryophyte diversity across Canada for the past 3 years, including a year and a half working on the bryophytes of the Hudson Bay Lowlands at the Canadian Museum of Nature. Adam grew up in Simcoe-Muskoka and has taken a special interest in the bryophytes of this region. He returns to the region each year and hopes you will join him to learn more about the mosses and liverworts that call Muskoka home.

July Paddle Quest

Our upcoming Paddle Quest will take place at Pen Lake in Huntsville. We will explore the lake by paddle, before arriving at our Wolf Mountain conservation easement. Followed by a hike up the mountain to get a birds eye view of Pen Lake.

We are so excited to announce Ripple 2025 will be held on Saturday June 21 at Turtle Jacks Muskoka Grill Port Carling for an evening of food, drinks, entertainment, and of course awareness. In 2023 we raised over $93,000 for the Muskoka Conservancy and over $100,000 in 2024 and we cannot wait to see the impact we can bring this year.

Muskoka Conservancy Announces Annual Bursary to Support Students in Natural Sciences and Related Technologies

Bracebridge, Ontario – Muskoka Conservancy is thrilled to announce the launch of its annual bursary program aimed at empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. This prestigious bursary is designed to assist students in achieving their academic qualifications in Natural Sciences, such as Biology, Environmental Studies, and Forestry, as well as related technologies, including Wildlife and Environmental Engineering.

“The Muskoka Conservancy Bursary underscores our commitment to protecting the natural beauty of Muskoka while nurturing future experts in environmental stewardship,” said Laura Thomas, Director and Chair of the Engagement Committee. “We’re excited to support students who share our passion for conservation and sustainability.”

About the Bursary

The Muskoka Conservancy Bursary will award $2,000 to a deserving student. The funds are distributed in two equal payments: the first upon proof of registration in a recognized post-secondary program, and the second following proof of attendance in the second term. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, academic commitment, and an understanding of the importance of land trusts in conserving natural spaces.

Leah Lewis Bio: Leah is a recent graduate of the Ecosystem Management Technician program at Fleming College and a dedicated volunteer with Muskoka Conservancy and Scales Nature Park. Over the past four years, Leah has immersed herself in reptile and amphibian monitoring in central Ontario, with a particular focus on road ecology. As a field naturalist, Leah is passionate about environmental conservation, education and sustainable land-use practices that promote both human and wildlife health and well-being.

She recently worked as a Wildlife Technician Lead with the MNRF and in April 2024, began an acting position as the Park Biologist for the Balsam Lake Cluster.

Two new Nature Reserves!

Muskoka Conservancy adds another 490-acres for nature conservation!

Muskoka Conservancy is proud to announce that it has purchased two new properties—a 390-acre forest and wetland property bordering the Severn River Conservation Reserve west of Gravenhurst, and a 100-acre wetland property fronting on Cassidy Lake, west of Glen Orchard. These latest acquisitions lift the local land trust’s total protected area over the 5,000-acre threshold in its mission to advance nature conservation in Muskoka.

“5,105-acres is an incredible milestone for Muskoka Conservancy,” said Scott Young, Executive Director. “I couldn’t be prouder of our people! From the day-to-day volunteers to our staff and our Board of Directors, from Joe Member to major funders, we could not achieve these things without excellent people.”

Both properties are part of a broad wildlife corridor that extends from south Gravenhurst in a northwest direction toward Georgian Bay and beyond. The Cassidy Lake property borders Crown land on two sides and is located about midway between two Provincially Significant Wetlands. The larger property borders on the provincial Severn River Conservation Reserve, expanding this protected area. Both properties protect mature forests and extensive wetlands that are habitat for species at risk.

“A big shout out to the Kenneth M Molson Foundation, MapleCross Fund, and family foundations like the Chisholm-Thomson Foundation,” said Young. “Without consistent funding partners who step up with larger gifts, none of this happens.”

Muskoka Conservancy’s immediate priority is to get to know the land, its ecosystems, habitat types and species, and will develop a conservation plan that prioritizes nature conservation.

“There will be opportunities in the future to visit these properties as part of our Nature Quest program of expert-guided hikes,” said Amanda Porter, Conservation Coordinator. “Whether these places are appropriate for footpaths open for public use, that will be determined through our process of conservation planning that will occur over the next year.”

MC’s protected lands now total 5,105 acres, with almost 70,000 feet of natural shoreline, and 880 acres of wetlands. MC has 58 properties across Muskoka’s watersheds.

“We are over the moon with joy that we were able to find the partners and resources to make this project a reality,” said Peter Love, Conservancy Board Chair.

Al Sinclair will be leading a mushroom walk at the Upjohn Nature Reserve to look at the beauty and diversity of Muskoka mushrooms and maybe add some new species to the nature reserve list. You will be learning how to identify the different species and the important role of fungi in the ecosystem.

Al's hobby for 50 years has been finding and photographing all the plants and animals in Muskoka. He was a founding member of the Muskoka Field Naturalists in 1982, has been a member of the Muskoka Conservancy Technical Advisory Group (Tag Team) for more than 30 years and received the Conservancy's Wayland Drew Natural Heritage Award in 2002. Al learned how to identify fungi with confidence by attending the Mycological Society of Toronto's Cain Forays that have been held annually in Muskoka for many decades.

Our upcoming Paddle Quest will take us to our Sage Creek Nature Reserve, where we will explore the delta where the creek meets the North Branch Muskoka River. We will start our journey at High Falls and paddle up the River to Sage Creek. We will make a stop along the way where we can get out to stretch our legs and walk the Nature Reserve, the bank is steep in areas.

When:

· Thursday, August 29th, 2024 (Rain Day: Friday, August 30th, 2024)

· Arrive by 9:00am to get organized and sign the waiver

· On the water by 9:30am

Where:

· Start and finish at the High Falls Picnic Area

· Paddle time: approximately 2 hours

· Stop and hike time: approximately 30 minutes

· There is a washroom at the High Falls Picnic Area

Bring your own:

· Canoe or kayak. This is NOT suitable for stand-up paddleboards,

· Paddles (including a spare), 15 m of floating rope, Lifejacket/PFD for each participant, whistle or other sound device, bailer.

· Hat, sunscreen, rain gear, lunch and snacks, water, shoes you can get wet.

Safety:

· All participants must be comfortable in the water and paddling in a current.

· PFD’s must always be worn and done up, even if it is a scorcher of a day.

· All children under the age of 16 require an adult

The District Municipality of Muskoka’s “Bugs in the Mud” or Benthic Monitoring Program is in its 20 ^th year! For the past two summers, it has been run by Maggie Dechert, a summer student pursuing her diploma as an Ecosystem Management Technician at Sir Sandford Fleming College. Maggie is a long-time resident of Muskoka and is having a lot of fun discovering many new lakes in the area and meeting the dedicated volunteers who have kept the benthic program running over the years. She is honoured to be a guide for the August Nature Quest and is looking forward to meeting more members of the Muskoka Conservancy.

The Benthic Monitoring Program was created as an accessible way for citizens to monitor potential changes over time in their lake quality. The idea is to collect baseline data over a number of years to gain a better understanding of the normal range and diversity of species in a given lake. This is done by counting the number and type of species present in a collected sample. A technician such as Maggie uses a “D-net” (worth a Google) and a pair of waders to collect the benthic macroinvertebrates that live at the bottom of the lake. This collection method is known as the “Travelling-Kick-and-Sweep”. Those who participate in the August Nature Quest will get the opportunity to hear about how we select sites for the benthic program and witness a collection that will occur on the Beaver Pond Trail at Upjohn Nature Reserve. Afterwards, we will look at the benthic macroinvertebrates as a group, and Maggie can help to identify the bugs by describing some of their unique features.

Maggie will also go into further detail about why this data is important to collect and how it can be interpreted to support water quality data. You do not need to know how to identify these bugs – nor will you be getting wet (unless it rains!). Maggie has plenty of supplies to help investigate the samples, including laminated keys for proper field identification. This is a unique opportunity to investigate organisms that we do not get to see every day – at least in their larval stage. Some of these organisms include Dragonflies, Damselflies, Mayflies and Caddisflies, which are born in the water before metamorphosis into their adult stage.

Our upcoming Paddle Quest will explore two properties protected by Muskoka Conservancy, we will paddle around the Muskoka River Delta Nature Reserve where the Muskoka River enters Lake Muskoka, and go for a short hike on the J.P. McVittie Nature Reserve, located on Eilean Gowan.

Dr. Neil Hutchinson has been working as a water quality scientist since 1976 and has observed changes in the nature, the geographic scope and sources of the pollutants and problems that have emerged and been tackled in that time. We have moved from an awareness of highly toxic synthetic pollutants being discharged from relatively few sources to non-toxic pollutants (some of which, like phosphorus and carbon dioxide, are essential to life) being discharged on a planetary basis. As our pollutants of concern become less toxic, the management complexity required to address them becomes more complex and involves more people and more levels of organization. There has also been a recurring theme of scientific enquiry, blissful ignorance or denial and predictions of economic mayhem until scientific persistence galvanizes public attention, politicians are forced to act and the environment responds. These will be illustrated with several examples which lead to the failure to address the problem of climate change and can inform the approach to road salt management.

Job Description
Muskoka Conservancy is currently seeking a post-secondary student to fill the spring-summer position of Program Coordinator. The successful candidate will assist our permanent staff as we work together to advance our mission: nature conservation in Muskoka.

The ideal candidate is a personable, energetic outdoors enthusiast with a passion for making a difference.

The Program Coordinator is a wide-ranging position that will have a support role in all aspects of the nature conservancy. This includes field work, communications, events, supporting volunteers, and more.

On any given day you may find yourself:

working alongside volunteers building a trail
working with biologists to conduct species inventories
talking to people about nature conservation at a community event
leading or supporting a Nature Quest guided hike
installing signage
wading in muck to remove invasive species by hand during the height of mosquito and/or black fly season
creating content for e-bulletins, web site and newsletters
generating positive posts for social media
processing event registrations, answering phone calls
routine office tasks such as data entry

Objectives of this Role

Advance the nature conservation mission and values of Muskoka Conservancy
Engage volunteers and participants
Continuous improvement, learn from each experience
Safely assist in execution of outdoor programs
Create and implement a conservation-minded program of your choice

Daily Responsibilities

Support permanent staff as directed
Participate in work parties to complete conservation objectives (example: removal of invasive species)
Participate in outreach and nature quest events
Assist in Nature Reserve monitoring
Support community science projects, including snake monitoring and invasive species management
Support annual fundraising event, including planning, auction support, and communications
Contribute photographs and other content for e-bulletins, newsletter, social media

Skills and Qualifications

Team player (responsible, reliable, adaptable, collaborator, listener, active participant)
Respect for nature
Comfortable working outdoors in typical Muskoka settings, including deep bush, on the water, and in wetlands
An understanding of health and safety in field and office environments
Enthusiastic willingness to learn, knowledge of local flora and fauna is an asset
Good physical fitness and endurance with ability to hike through rough terrain for up to 5 km with a pack and tools
Outdoor experience
Secondary School Graduation Diploma, enrollment in a post-secondary program in environmental science, ecology, biology or a related field
Cooperative and courteous with people
Operate various hand tools

Muskoka Conservancy has acquired 597-acres for nature conservation

Muskoka Conservancy is proud to announce that it has purchased a 597-acre property in southeast Gravenhurst, the latest acquisition in its mission to advance nature conservation in Muskoka.

“We could not have done this without excellent donors and funding partners,” said Scott Young of Muskoka Conservancy. “The previous owners each made a significant donation of land, without which, frankly, we would have had a challenge building the momentum to see this through. I’d like to thank Alan Young, Brad Ford, Don Scott, William Fitchett, and Gerard Newman for their generous gifts.”

“As it worked out, we are extremely happy and grateful to have attracted excellent funding partners to complete the purchase. We owe many thanks to the Maple Cross fund, the Kenneth M Molson Foundation.” Funding support was also provided from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC)’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF) to Ontario Land Trust Alliance and its partners, including Muskoka Conservancy. The program supports nature-based projects that promote carbon storage and capture while providing important habitat for species at risk and/or species of cultural and local importance. Additional funding was provided from The Greenlands Conservation Partnership. The Greenlands Conservation Partnership helps conserve ecologically important natural areas and protect wetlands, grasslands and forests that help mitigate the effects of climate change. Through the Greenlands Conservation Partnership, a total of $38 million has been invested to date by the Ontario government. Additional match funds are raised from other sources, such as individual donations and foundation support through the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Land Trust Alliance, and other levels of government.

MC’s new conservation land borders on the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park. It features mature mixed forests, rock barrens, wetlands, and a small lake. The property is a former hunt camp that has several kilometers of trails, some of which extend into Crown Land and the neighbouring Provincial Park.

“Protecting more natural areas, including this property near the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park, will increase recreational opportunities for the public,” said Andrea Khanjin, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. “Partnering with conservation leaders like the Ontario Land Trust Alliance and its members, including Muskoka Conservancy, has allowed us to expand conservation in Ontario. Since 2020, our collaborative efforts, through the Greenlands Conservation Partnership, has resulted in the protection of 420,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land – equivalent to more than two and a half times the size of the City of Toronto.”

“Muskoka Conservancy’s immediate priority is to get to know the land, its ecosystems, habitat types and species,” says Young. “Based on that, we will develop a conservation plan that prioritizes nature conservation. In the not-too-distant future we would like very much to offer this new reserve as a hiking destination for nature lovers.”

MC plans to explore the potential uses of the land for nature education programming, bird watching, nature photography, and recreational activities like hiking and snowshoeing.

“This is a unique and significant property with habitat for several known species at risk,” says Amanda Porter, MC’s Conservation Coordinator. “We expect to find Blanding’s turtle, Eastern Hog-nosed snake, and several bird species that are endangered or at risk. Our conservation planning will have to take these factors into consideration. It’s a nature reserve first and foremost.”

This latest addition becomes MC’s largest nature reserve, surpassing the 419-acre Bear Cave-Koetitz Nature Reserve north of Lake Rosseau. MC’s protected lands now total 4,597 acres, with almost 70,000 feet of natural shoreline, and 700 acres of wetlands. MC as 53 properties across Muskoka.

“We are over the moon with joy that we were able to find the partners and resources to make this project a reality,” said Bob Weekes, Conservancy Board Chair.

Join Guest Speaker, Peter Love, to learn about Climate and Energy Conservation!

Peter will speak about climate change as the most important environmental issue to face mankind and the role of man made greenhouse gas emissions in creating this problem. He will highlight the fact that 81% of Canada’s man-made greenhouse gas emissions come from the production of use of energy. He will also note that about 60% of the energy consumed in Canada is wasted in conversion. Based on this, he will summarize the importance of energy conservation, the benefits of conservation and its challenges. He will refer specifically to what you can do at home, at work and in school as well as the role for businesses and governments. This presentation will highlight the close relationship between energy conservation and nature conservancy.

Peter Love provides strategic and policy advice on energy policy issues and serves on several corporate and non-profit boards. For the last 12 years he has been teaching university courses on energy efficiency and recently updated his free on-line textbook. Previous roles have included Chief Energy Conservation Officer of Ontario and member of the team at Pollution Probe in the 70’s that developed the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle. He currently serves as Chair of the Centre for Community Energy Transformation as well as Toronto 2030 District. He has had a cottage in Muskoka for more than 50 years and currently serves as volunteer Treasurer of Muskoka Conservancy.

Our upcoming Paddle Quest will explore two properties protected by Muskoka Conservancy, we will paddle to Wolf/Strawberry Mountain and take a short hike up to the lookout over Pen Lake.
After the paddle you can walk or drive down Maplehurst Drive, which borders the Pen Lake Farms Nature Reserve, a protected meadow habitat.

Where:

Start and finish at the Pen Lake public access off Shaw Rd ( 1006 Shaws Ln, Huntsville, ON P1H 2J6 )
Take Highway 60 and turn right on Maplehurst Drive, just past Pioneer Memorial Church, Hillside.  Drive straight down towards the lake for 1 min (500m) and you’ll see a small parking area.
Paddle time: approximately 2 hours
Hike time: approximately 45 minutes
There will be no bathroom access

Bring your own:

Canoe or kayak. This is NOT suitable for stand-up paddleboards,
Paddles (including a spare), 15 m of floating rope, Lifejacket/PFD for each participant, whistle or other sound device, bailer.
Hat, sunscreen, rain gear, lunch and snacks, water, shoes you can get wet.

Safety:

All participants must be comfortable in the water and paddling in wind and waves.
PFD’s must always be worn and done up, even if it is a scorcher of a day.

We are recruiting volunteers to join us from approximately 9am-1pm on July 20th, July 25th and July 27th to help manage two stands of invasive Phragmites on our Bert and Millie’s Marsh Nature Reserve in Utterson, between Bracebridge and Huntsville near Highway 11.
We need 10 people for each of these days!
Training and equipment will be provided.

We are looking for volunteers who are:
Passionate about nature conservation
Willing to get their hands dirty in the field
Don’t mind working in various weather and biting insects

We will be targeting invasive Phragmites. An invasive wetland grass that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. It forms dense stands and spreads aggressively, negatively impacting species at risk. We have been working to eradicate the two stands on Bert and Millie’s Marsh over the past few years, and the time of year is here again!

Muskoka River Delta Nature Reserve and J.P. McVittie Nature Reserve,

Join Paddle Quest leaders Amanda Porter and Sue Sedgwick on an paddling adventure to where the Muskoka River enters lake Muskoka (Muskoka River Delta NR) and stretch your legs on a full hike around our Eilean Gowan Island, where our J.P McVittie NR is located.

This Paddle Quest will be capped at 10 participants. Registration required .

Laura Gilmour is the owner of Wild Muskoka a small artisan foods and drinks company based in Dwight that uses sustainably harvested local plants in their unique products. She is a dedicated naturalist, forager, herbalist and homesteader who strives to live in good relationship with the land and her more-than-human neighbours.

2023 Annual General Meeting

Muskoka Conservancy is hosting its Annual Meeting on Friday June 9 ^th at 10am , a live event! The meeting will be hosted at the Raymond Community Hall and will feature special guest speaker Adam Oliver Brown. To RSVP, please email info@muskokaconservancy.org .

Adam Oliver Brown , a lifelong performer throughout North America and Europe, will speak to us about the importance of communicating and engaging the public in nature and science. And the role this plays in fostering an appreciation for nature conservation.

Brown's work at the Department of Biology at University of Ottawa focuses on the public communication of science, and his expertise includes insects and the pollination of wild berries. He has published work on Fostering creativity in science learning, and says "I feel it is important to explore the art of science and the science of art."

Muskoka Conservancy is the nature conservancy of Muskoka that permanently protects 4,000 acres of beautiful land, 60,500 feet of natural shoreline, and more than 700 acres of wetlands in Muskoka.

“We’ve been punching above our weight for a while now, and the future is looking bright,” says Scott Young, Executive Director. “The past year has been one of our best. Since last June we’ve added over 660-acres of conservation land with another 825 feet of shoreline and over 121-acres of wetland. We are steady and strong, and getting stronger with the addition of a slate of dynamic, highly qualified new directors.”

Muskoka Conservancy is a member-based organization. Anyone may attend the meeting, but only members can participate in voting. Make your vote count this year as we add several new Board Directors! At the meeting, you will learn more about the experience and knowledge we are adding to Muskoka Conservancy.

First-ever Muskoka EV Show comes to Bracebridge Fairgrounds

See and test drive electric vehicles. Get your questions answered.

Muskoka Conservancy and Climate Action Muskoka proudly announce the first-ever Muskoka EV Show, coming to the Bracebridge Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 27 from 10:00am – 1:00pm .

“The future is electric, and the faster we can get there the better,” said Peter Love, an energy consultant and Muskoka Conservancy board member who instigated the idea. “Muskoka is well-positioned to be a leader in this revolution.”

“Private vehicles are responsible for almost 70% of all community greenhouse gas emissions in Muskoka,” said Lesley Hastie, lead event organizer for Climate Action Muskoka. “Switching to electric promises to make a huge difference here. People are excited to see and test drive and learn about electric vehicles. The Muskoka EV Show will help them make that move.”

The show—so far—includes:

· New EVs from Cavalcade Ford , Tesla , Muskoka Nissan and Hyundai of Muskoka

· New electric bikes from 171 Electric Bike Company

· An electric launch conversion from Stan Hunter Boatbuilder

· Park-and-Display area with electric cars and bikes and their owners, ready to answer your questions. Some may opt to take visitors for a ride along or a test drive.

· Presentations and information from the Electric Vehicle Society , enVgo , Lakeland Solutions , PlugNDrive , reThinkgreen , and keynote speaker Steve Lapp , an expert on EVs and low carbon energy technology system design and education.

· Admission is free. Donations appreciated. Bring your own water bottle.

Winter Tree ID Nature Quest

Hope has over five years of experience working with Ontario’s native turtle species. Hope loves hiking, canoeing and camping and when she’s not out in nature, cooking for her friends and family.

Second Nature Reserve in 2023!

We now protect 51 properties!

Off to a great start in 2023 Muskoka Conservancy has just added another nature reserve! This will be the 51st property Muskoka Conservancy is now protecting and its second acquisition in 2023.

“One interesting feature of this property is that it directly borders the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park on two sides,” said Scott Young, executive director at Muskoka Conservancy. “By adding more protected land to the area, wildlife benefit from connectivity of their corridors.”

Acquired on Jan 23rd 2023, the new nature reserve in Barkway is an impressive 173 acres. This includes 50 acres of wetlands, and 825 ft of shoreline.

“Features like wetlands and rock barrens are highly biodiverse and provide habitat for many species-at-risk of reptiles and birds,” said Amanda Porter, Conservation Coordinator at Muskoka Conservancy. “We are excited to find out more about the species inhabiting the new nature reserve.”

In the spring, Muskoka Conservancy’s team will make visits to the nature reserve to do a complete biological inventory.

Because of the area’s proximity to Silver Doe Nature Reserve – another NR protected by Muskoka Conservancy – we expect to find species such as Blandings Turtle, Whippoorwill, Five-lined Skink, a variety of snakes, and much more!

In large part, we‘d like to thank the Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA) and their Nature Smart Climate Solutions Program supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for making this conservation project possible.

This fund goes to supporting projects that conserve, restore and enhance wetlands, peatlands, and grasslands to store and capture carbon.

“Each land acquisition is different,” said Young, ”we are happy this went through without a hitch.”

Muskoka Conservancy is a charity and land trust that acquires land in Muskoka for the purpose of nature conservation. Some of these lands are donated, while others are purchased by the land trust for their ecological significance.

President Bob Weekes of Muskoka Conservancy had this to say as he reflected on the organizations start of the year, “Muskoka Conservancy is going from success to success in protecting significant habitat for all manner of species. This is yet another example of how we are ensuring that there will be a place in Muskoka and southern Parry Sound for the natural world in the future. We encourage members of the public to visit our website to see what we are up to and how they can become involved. Future generations will thank us!”

In total, Muskoka Conservancy now protects 3915 acres; 60,481 feet of shoreline; and 703 acres of wetland.

It's Official! Muskoka Conservancy's 50th Property!

Muskoka Conservancy now protects 50 properties! This newest nature reserve is home to several meadow species at risk, including bank swallow, barn swallow, wood thrush, bobolink, and Eastern meadowlark.

Spruce trees along the edges of the residential area, provide a buffer between people as well as nesting sites.

The area is identified as a birding hot-spot for birding enthusiasts just outside of Bracebridge.

Meadows are not only valuable habitat for species at risk; grasslands are also highly valuable as carbon sinks. Storing carbon in their roots and soil.

We are very thankful to Mr. John Fitzmaurice & Mrs. Eve Richardson, as well as Dr. Kent & Mrs. Susie Phillips. It is because of the help of these generous donors that we have been able to purchase this newest nature reserve!

Muskoka Conservancy is seeking to increase its Board of Directors from the current nine members to twelve for the term running from June 2023 until 2026, with the opportunity for renewal. We seek individuals with experience and skills in financial management with a professional designation, fundraising and philanthropy, and law. Experience with municipal and land use planning would be an asset.

At Muskoka Conservancy, our success as a land trust depends on people—volunteers, donors and staff who give their time and resources because they are enthusiastic about our mission: nature conservation in Muskoka. We are dedicated to conserving more land every year, and we are seeking volunteers for our Board of Directors who have the skills and drive to help.

For thirty years, Muskoka Conservancy, a registered charity, has been operating as a nature conservation land trust. We have built a conservation portfolio of 3,800 acres of forest habitat, species rich wetlands, unique rock barrens, and 60,000 feet of rare natural shoreline. We engage in a selection of community conservation activities that inspire caring through love of the natural world, in an area that encompasses the watersheds of Muskoka’s lakes and rivers, from Algonquin Park to Georgian Bay, and from the Severn River to Parry Sound. We are particularly seeking individuals with experience and skills in financial management preferably with a professional designation, fundraising and philanthropy, and law. Experience with municipal and land use planning would be an asset.

Our Board meets 6-8 times annually (in-person and virtually) to review budgets, establish and track results against its strategic plan. Board members are expected to participate on one of the Board Committees – Land Acquisition and Conservation; Finance & Risk Management; Engagement; and Governance. Directors may take the lead in fundraising activities. Board members provide advice and guidance to Muskoka Conservancy’s Executive Director.

to Bert Cross Nature Reserve to look for migrating birds!

Join Nature Quest hike leader and avid birder, Janice House for an evening of fall birding at the Bert Cross Nature Reserve.

The Nature Reserve is made up of meadow marsh and thicket swamp wetland ecosystems, as well as the transitional zone into upland mixed forest. The wetland is connected to and bordered on the south by the Henry Marsh.

Bert Cross Nature Reserve and surrounding ecosystems provide important habitat for many bird, amphibian, reptile, insect species!

New Nature Reserve!

Muskoka Conservancy Gifted Lake Rosseau Headwaters!

Muskoka Conservancy now protects 428 acres of land north of Lake Rosseau, thanks to a generous donation. The land, near the Cardwell Township Old Growth Conservation Reserve, was donated by Rose-Maria Koetitz and is being named The Bear Cave-Koetitz Nature Reserve. It includes part of the Shadow River and large wetland areas that feed the Rosseau River.

“This is our largest single Nature reserve by area,” says Scott Young of Muskoka Conservancy. “It includes two water sources into Lake Rosseau which makes the area significant to protecting the water quality on this iconic Muskoka lake.”

The Bear Cave-Koetitz Nature Reserve is in a unique location where watersheds of The Rosseau River and The Shadow River come within less than a kilometer of each other on their divergent meandering way through north Muskoka. The two rivers flow into Lake Rosseau about five kilometers apart, The Shadow flows into Rosseau Bay and the Rosseau into Mutchinbacker Bay.

“I'm glad Rose-Maria could do this for the animals and the environment,” says her close friend, Janis Gibbs.

Natural wetlands are critical habitat to 20% of Ontario’s species at risk, some of which find their homes on Bear Cave-Koetitz Nature Reserve. In addition, wetlands are important to the filtration of water and slow the flow of water over land. By protecting wetlands, conservation efforts improve overall water quality, reducing incidents of Blue-Green Algae blooms which have occurred in Lake Rosseau. Reduced flow helps prevent flooding, which has also been an issue on all Muskoka’s big lakes.

“We are very thankful for this generous donation made by Rose-Maria Koetitz,” said Bob Weekes, President of the Muskoka Conservancy. “This is a big deal and it never would have happened without Conservancy volunteers. I’d like to offer a special thanks to Janis Gibbs for facilitating the donation.”

Fishing Line Recycling - New Program Launch!

Muskoka Conservancy has launched a fishing line recycling program!

The pilot program will test three locations for anglers to recycle line, two in Bracebridge and one in

Gravenhurst.

The program launch was held at The Wharf in Bracebridge Bay Park , a popular fishing location, and was attended by Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Graydon Smith, and Bracebridge Deputy Mayor, Steve Clement.

“With 1.5 million anglers in Ontario there is a lot of fishing line that can be disposed of

improperly.” said Ayden Veitch, Program Coordinator at the Muskoka Conservancy. “Now with

the new line recycling program, fishing line can be disposed of properly.”

The other two locations will be the George Road boat launch and the boat launch at the Gravenhurst Wharf .

If the pilot project is successful, Muskoka Conservancy would like to expand the program across Muskoka!

During the year the old, worn out, and tangled fishing line will be collected in distinctive white recycling tubes. At the end of the year Muskoka Conservancy will collect the fishing line and send it to Berkley Fishing for recycling. Once Berkley Fishing receives the fishing line, they melt it down into plastic pellets and turn it into new plastic products, such as fish habitats.

There are two upcoming Invasive Species Management events that we would love your help with!

We are recruiting volunteers to join us on July 26 ^th , and August 9 ^th to help manage two stands of invasive Phragmites on our Bert and Millie’s Marsh Nature Reserve.

Phragmites is an invasive wetland grass that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. It forms dense stands and spreads aggressively, negatively impacting species at risk. We have been working to eradicate the two stands on Bert and Millie’s Marsh over the past few years, and the time of year for “Phragmites Phighting” is here again.

Past experience with invasive species management is helpful but not required. We are looking for volunteers who are:

Passionate about nature conservation
Willing to get their hands dirty in the field
Don’t mind working in various weather and biting insects

Training and equipment will be provided.

Hike along the Beaver Pond Loop, stopping to search for turtles and other wildlife at each of the beaver pond lookouts.

Difficulty Level: easy-moderate, some uneven terrain with some hills.

NisoMakwa is a two-spirit founding member of Qalipu Mikmaq of Newfoundland. He has lived in Bracebridge for the past two years and is an activist for climate change, Indigneous rights.. He's also a part of the Champions Committee for the IDEA advisory group and works with the MIA and MIFC.

For The Love of Muskoka

Making a Memorial Donation is a wonderful way to honour the memory of a loved one and pass on the love of Muskoka to future generations.

This is a story submitted to the Muskoka Conservancy along side a generous donation to honour Don Young, a great man who loved Muskoka and instilled that same love and appreciation of Muskoka o nto his family and friends.

What Muskoka meant to my Dad (Don Young)

Many years ago, my Grandpa and Grandma bought land on Lake Muskoka in Bala and three cottages were built on their property. One of the cottages was for my Dad and Mom and their children (then my two brothers and I - my younger brother came along when I was 12). My Dad passed away on May 20 of last year at the age of 93. He touched so many in his life and was often referred to as “the nicest man on earth”. Always positive, he lifted others when they were down with his great sense of humour and zest for life. Kindness and compassion spilled over to his love for animals.

And Dad loved Muskoka. He loved the forests, wetlands, and windy roads that carved out the beauty of these lands. Dad enjoyed cottaging in Muskoka so very much where family and friends gathered and made wonderful memories of playing baseball, water skiing, swimming, boating, board games, Yahtzee, concerts, and bridge. A drive to Bracebridge on Hwy 118 would often involve a turn off onto a road that Dad hadn’t ventured down before – “to see more of the wonders of Muskoka”. When Dad got older and needed to get out and walk to work out his leg kinks, he would drive to Bala and stroll around the town for exercise and to say hi to the locals.

Dad was thrilled to hear that Dave and I had retired to Bracebridge – we made our home at this wonderful town four years ago. I’m glad we did as Dad’s memory is everywhere. I feel close to him here in the forests and by the lakes. I hear his kind voice in the wind rustling through the trees and through the soft voices of the birds. I have made a donation to Muskoka Conservancy in Dad’s memory because he would be happy to know that the lands, waters, and animals of his favourite place were being cared for and would be here for future generations to enjoy.

I am sharing a photo of Dad and I at Dave’s and my wedding 13 years ago. Where do you think the wedding was? That’s right! At the cottage in Muskoka. The best day ever.

The Pinelands Bay Nature Reserve is finally official!

Muskoka Conservancy has received the unanimous endorsement of the Township of Muskoka Lakes Council on a package of planning approvals that were the last step in establi shing this 82-acre nature reserve. The pretty conservation property features valleys and streams, poor fen, rock outcroppings and mature forest situated inland between Lake Joseph and Lake Rosseau.

“It’s great news for all of us,” said David Jones, who represents the group of neighbours who backed the conservation initiative. “Turning our fight against an inappropriate development into the founding of a new nature reserve will make everyone on the lake happy.”

In late 2020, Muskoka Conservancy was able to purchase approximately 102 acres with frontage on Peninsula Road near Port Carling. As part of the $1-million fundraising process to acquire the land, the Conservancy agreed to transfer seven small lot additions to six of the neighbouring landowners. The approval of the consents, along with rezoning the retained 82-acres as environmentally protected, officially establishes the Pinelands Bay Nature Reserve.

“This is a classic example of how neighbouring landowners can work with the Conservancy to preserve a significant natural area for future generations,” said Bob Weekes, Muskoka Conservancy President. “We are most grateful to them and to the Township of Muskoka Lakes Council.”

The property has a contentious history, having been previously owned by a real estate development firm that was pressuring for planning approvals. The applications became the subject of Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearings that were contested by concerned neighbours. After significant spending and fighting through the planning process, the neighbours were able to stop the development. But the feeling of victory didn’t last. A short while after the OMB hearing, the development company struck a deal with a construction company to purchase the land.

“Here we go again, is what we all were thinking at the time,” says Andy Burgess, a Lake Joseph resident and key organizer among the neighbours. “But as it turns out, the owner of the construction firm was also a cottager on Lake Joseph, and he shared our concern for the future of Muskoka’s natural heritage.”

After convincing the construction company to defer the contract to purchase to them, the neighbours embarked on the task of raising funds. After initially struggling, the neighbours approached Muskoka Conservancy, the local land trust with a mission to conserve nature.

“By having the Conservancy acquire the property, it made the transaction significantly more attractive for our group,” said Burgess, “First, it was less expensive – we each received a charitable tax receipt for the money we donated. It also meant that our group would not have the ongoing property taxes and maintenance costs of the property. And, finally, the property would now be preserved forever.”

Muskoka Conservancy protects forty-eight properties adding up to over 3,100 acres. These conservation lands feature over 50,000 feet of big lake shoreline, hundreds of acres of species rich wetlands, and thousands of acres of mature forests.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the support of the community, Muskoka Lakes Council, and everyone who helped along the way,” said Scott Young of Muskoka Conservancy. “It was a team effort.”

Sage Creek - New Protected Lands

Fowler Construction donates Sage Creek to Muskoka Conservancy

Fowler Construction has gifted sixty-seven hectares (166 acres) to Muskoka Conservancy. The land features the 1.6 kilometer stretch of beautiful Sage Creek where it tumbles through a mature forest valley and joins The Muskoka River North Branch. The gift of land includes over six hundred meters of frontage on Muskoka River.

Muskoka Conservancy’s technical volunteers, lead by the late Bill Dickinson, studied the property, and view it as an important natural area. Sage Creek is a cold-water stream featuring Brook Trout.

“The truth is, Fowler Construction is a large company that is focussed on heavy industry, often transforming landscapes,” says Scott Young, Muskoka Conservancy’s Executive Director. “Fowler did not have to gift this land to a nature conservancy, but the people at Fowler should be acknowledged for looking up from their development work long enough to recognize that nature is important—that nature is what makes Muskoka special. I’d like to thank Fowler for giving this land to Muskoka Conservancy to protect forever.”

The source of Sage Creek is Sage Lake in the Township of Lake of Bays. The creek meanders more than ten kilometers from east to west, collecting water from more than two thousand hectares of wetlands and small lakes along the way. Sage Creek’s Muskoka River confluence is located 1.5 kilometers down river from Duck Chutes, opposite from the Bracebridge Resource Management Center.

“We at Fowler are very proud to have arrived at this, the perfect solution for preserving the Sage Creek lands,” said James Gordon of Fowler Construction. “It became apparent to us that these lands were special, not only due to their spectacular appearance but also their environmental contribution. The Muskoka Conservancy is the ideal steward to keep this land, as nature intended, for future generations.”

Nature Quest - Winter Hike at Upjohn Nature Reserve 2021

David shared some insight into the lives of these misunderstood creatures and why we should all want to protect them.

David is the chief park naturalist for Algonquin provincial Park. He is interested in wildlife of all kinds but has a real soft spot for those with hard shells. David has studied many kinds of reptiles and amphibians in Ontario, and dedicated a significant part of his career to educating the citizens of the province on these amazing animals and encouraging their conservation and the places they live. He lives in Huntsville.

FEBRUARY 23, 2021 ~ First up in our series of webinars is Seeding Native Plants with Laura Thomas of Hidden Habitat discussing how to ethically collect seeds and clean them for storage, as well as the best methods for storing seeds , how to germinate your seeds indoors and outdoors, and how to care for your newly sprouted seedlings.

Laura Thomas is a graduate of the University of Waterloo’s Environment and Resource Studies program, and has worked in the landscape industry for over fifteen year , blending her passion for conservation and landscape design. Laura saw a need for better, sustainable land management practices especially within the realm of private landowners. Merging the elements of good landscape design with the practices of restoration ecology seemed both obvious and necessary given the fragmentation and destruction of landscapes today. However, while working in the landscape industry she found that often people felt they had to compromise beauty for conservation. Given her expertise in ecology, native plants and landscape design she knew that one could still have the simplicity and impact of a modern garden while providing food and shelter for local wildlife. Her unique and thoughtful designs demonstrate that healthy landscapes can be beautiful landscapes.

Nature Quest - Fall Flora and Fauna

On Nove mber 10th and 11th, small groups joined Aaron Rusak, MC's Land Stewardship Coordinator, at Upjohn Nature Reserve to learn more about the flora and fauna seen during the fall season. Some of the highlights included a Bald eagle, White-winged crossbill, and some Eastern red-backed salamanders. Several plants and clubmosses were still showing in the colder weather and we got to practice our bark identification.

Trailblazing conservationist challenged Muskoka Conservancy to do more

Peter Goering passed-away on October 14, 2020 after complications from a severe fall. He had an outstanding career as an architect with a large firm in Toronto and eventually he started his own business designing homes, cottages and dwellings in the Arctic. While successful in his professional career, it was with environmental issues that Peter made a very significant mark.

In the 1990s, feeling the need to protect land in Muskoka he became a member of the Muskoka Heritage Foundation and the Muskoka Heritage Trust, which would later merge to become Muskoka Conservancy (MC). His drive and leadership soon put him on track to becoming a very active director. In 1998 he paved the way to the first Conservation Easement for Muskoka Conservancy. This pioneer agreement was on his own property on Lake of Bays, ensuring 1,800 feet of shoreline and 34 acres of mature forest would remain natural forever. This easement continues to be one of the keystone properties for Muskoka Conservancy.

Once this was completed, he set his sights on the need for “Dark Skies” for sake of astronomy, wildlife and human health. Working with Jan McDonnell from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and Mike Silver, a Torrance resident, he strove to achieve the designation of the Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve as a “dark sky preserve”. This was attained in 1999 and was the first dark sky reserve in Canada. This set the stage for more to follow and was even mentioned in the new astronomy sections of the Grade 9 science texts in Ontario. At Peter’s encouragement, wording to protect the dark skies was incorporated into the guideline documents for all the Conservation Reserves in Parry Sound District. Peter then pushed for and worked on an “Ecology of the Night” symposium fall 2003 in Dorset. This international conference attracted speakers from Europe and across North America resulting in segments being re-broadcasted on CBC “Ideas” show. The direct result was dark sky protocols for all Parks Canada and a new word added to international lexicon: “Scotobiology”—the study of biological systems that require nightly darkness for their effective performance.

Peter remained active with the “dark sky” movement for the next decade and in 2009 spearheaded the 10th anniversary of the Torrance Barrens as a Dark Sky Conservation Reserve. This highly successful event was a joint effort by MNR, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), MC, the Township of Muskoka Lakes, and many community volunteers.

Peter was the highest profiled member of our organization from the mid 90’s to the mid 2000’s. In recognition of his outstanding contributions over many years, Peter was named an Honourary Director of Muskoka Conservancy. His determination, energy and dedication will be greatly missed. Our sympathies go out to his wife Beryl and the rest of his family.

In Honour of Bill Dickinson - Muskoka's Greatest Voice for Nature

Bill Dickinson is recognized in Muskoka and beyond as one of our best environmental visionaries. Bill is a champion of wilderness, of wetlands, of forests, lakes, and st reams with healthy natural shorelines. Bill is a highly knowledgeable field biologist whose personal mission is to share what he knows. Bill Dickinson is an educator whose vision, energy and leadership has impacted countless students of all ages.

Muskoka would be a lesser place, and certainly Muskoka Conservancy would be a lesser organization without Bill, who continues to channel so much of his passion for nature through our fortunate land trust. (excerpt from the nomination of Bill for the OLTA 2020 Angus McLeod Vision Award.)

Here are the inspiring words of Bill Dickinson upon receiving The Angus McLeod Vision Award by the Ontario Land Trust Alliance at its 2020 Annual Gathering:

Awards can be wonderful thing in that they remind people of the good things that are happening around us. But sometimes for the recipient, there is an uneasiness in accepting, since for every project undertaken there are usually dozens of other people involved that make that venture happen. I have been lucky enough to work with tremendous staffs and volunteers over the last twenty-five years. During that time the Muskoka Conservancy team has contributed immensely to the land trust movement in Ontario. It has been a great journey and will continue to be one.

I would like to add that I think the work all of the land trusts is more important now than ever before. Across Canada and around the world the planet is undergoing massive urbanization in which much is gained, but much more is lost. In his book “The Sacred Balance” David Suzuki states “The most destructive aspect of cities is the profound schism created between human beings and nature.

Who would have imagined that one of the side effects of COVID 19 would be perhaps the narrowing of that schism? The pandemic has illustrated the value of all our green spaces: parks, ravines, ponds, nature reserves even corner parkettes etc.

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society said in mid-July that “the COVID 19 pandemic has revealed the critical role of protected areas “not just in protecting nature and tackling climate change, but in the health and well-being of citizens.

The recent global pandemic has forced us to consider the link between nature, human health, and economic health and to rethink our future.” Says Sandra Schwartz of CPAWS.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, as First Nations have always known, and as Canadians are discovering this year of the pandemic, in nature men and women cast off the years and retain the wonder of a child.

For the last few years, every email that I send out bears the tag lines: “Help keep nature part of our human nature, Please support your local land trust”

Winner of the 2020 Michael Foster Photography Award

This award is presented annually to the photographer whose image best represents Muskoka’s natural or built heritage in a way that demonstrates the beauty of the area. This year’s theme was “Any Aspect of Trees”.

A few words from our 2020 winner, Janet Butler:

“I am an amateur photographer who simply loves the great outdoors! I take my camera everywhere – kayaking, hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, skiing, and on walks with my dog. We have had a cottage in Muskoka since 2003 and I have loved capturing all the beauty this area has to offer. My favourite time to shoot is early in the morning capturing the gorgeous reflections on the lake. This photo was taken on a warm, early July morning while kayaking around the Pinafore Island group on Lake Rosseau. I loved the reflection of the green trees on the beautiful blue water and the bright blue sky in the background.”

Autumn Birding Nature Quest did not disappoint!

We had two Nature Quests back to back on September 29th and 30th at Henry Marsh. The Marsh is adjacent to one of our protected properties, the Bert Cross Family Nature Reserve. Along with magnificent fall colours, we saw over two dozen species over the two days, including a Green Heron, Spotted Sandpiper, Rusty Blackbird, Wood Ducks, Sparrows (White-crowned, Lincoln & Song), and Nashville Warbler.

During the walk we also talked about the value of “scrub piles”. Creating scrub piles or leaving fallen branches, limbs, and leaves, creates ideal habitat for many of our native songbirds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.

If you want to see more wildlife on your property consider creating a scrub pile. Placing it near a bird feeder can also create more oppo rtunities for bird watching!

Bass Island, Lake Rosseau is the recipient of the Muskoka Conservancy 2020 Built and Natural Heritage Award!

A stellar example of good land stewardship and the occupants over the years are to be commended.

" Bass Island is an outstanding example of how families can cottage lightly on the land for generations (138 years in this case). As you circle the island you are struck by the realization that any approaches (or access points) to the water are natural…a small swale or a bit of barren rock outcrop sufficed. No vegetation has been cleared from the shoreline to get to the water. For that matter little has been cleared from the whole island...just enough for a modest tastefully maintained cottage. Trails are minimal, defined and lightly used. Bass island has a surprisingly diverse vegetational component for such a small area. The shoreline is robust with two main shrubs: Mountain Holly and Winterberry. Other shoreline species include: Cattails, Sweet Gale, Spirea and Alder. In the more exposed areas Sumac, Blueberries, Common Juniper, Raspberries and Corydalis are represented. The tree component is interesting in that it is of uneven age and relatively diverse. This suggests that they have prospered and declined rather naturally over the 100+ years that the island has been settled. The tree species are often represented as singles and include: White Pine, Red Pine, White Cedar, White Birch, Balsam, Red Maple, Mountain Maple, and Red Oak. The understory ground cover is largely dominated by Wild Lily of the Valley. During my short visit, a Song Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow were seen and heard along with a Green Frog. As we left a Ringbill Gull was standing on guard on a rock near the picturesque white bridge. "
