Land Stewards
Be our eyes and ears on one of our Nature Reserves. If you enjoy nature conservation and hiking, a Land Steward Role is perfect for you!
Role Responsibilities
- Monitor your assigned Nature Reserve once a month or as often as you can, ideally at least four times a year
- During site visits, monitor the following: vegetation damage, damaging/hazardous activities, invasive species, species at risk, the conditions of the trails and signage
- Take photos and plot points using Landscape, our land stewardship software (website and mobile app)
- Support and/or lead activities on your Nature Reserve, such as clean-up, invasive species management, trail work etc.
Qualifications
- Ideally a neighbour or someone a short drive from one of our protected Nature Reserves
- Interest and base knowledge of nature and the environment
- Comfortable hiking in and around forests, wetlands, and rocky areas
- Comfortable operating a land stewardship phone app for reporting on site visits
- Access to a cell phone (no mobile data needed) and a computer to complete site visit reports.
Why we do it
- Once Protected Areas are established, MC is required to complete regular monitoring of the land to ensure that it remains in good condition
- With 62 Protected Areas and counting, we call on our Land Stewards to help with these monitoring efforts and keep us informed of any potential issues on the land.

- Kitty’s Wish & Robinson Lake (Lake Vernon, Huntsville)
- Trussler (Buck Lake, Huntsville)
- McLean’s Bay (Sparrow Lake, Gravenhurst).
*Training will be provided including how to use the mobile app. Various other training opportunities, resources, and tools are also available to Land Stewards.
